Wedding Day Essentials

Wedding Day Essentials – well where do I start on this one. I am just going to try and give any couple a few ideas about going about planning their day.

For starters, there are just too many things that I would not be able to help or give advice on so I will just try and stick to the photography end of things. I am sure i will go off on the odd tangent so apologies in advance.

So photography – where do I start? For any couple looking to book a photographer, they should probably start with a website. The vast majority of professional photographers will spend some money on a website. This is just to showcase their work. It is generally one of those things that most people seem to look for. Most people can take a photographer (or any other wedding vendor) seriously, if they have a website. That said, I would also check out the Facebook and Instagram pages of said photographers as usually there are many more images to browse through. I personally find more of the social media pages to have more candid images. I prefer the more natural poses as opposed to the very posed images. Please don’t get me wrong, i always get some posed images also – i just prefer to document the day by capturing moments and creating memories.

Contacting the Photographer

Once you find a photographer that you like then just make contact with them and have a chat – the more popular photographers are booked up a long time in advance so you will have to find out if your date is free in their calendar. If the photographer is free then it is very simple just to make a booking fee payment to secure the date. I will offer an engagement / pre-wedding shoot for all couples. I think this can be important more for the couples as it gets them used to being in front of a camera. If the couple know that all is under control then it helps them to relax. You can then enjoy the day while the photographer just gets on with the job. Also for the photographer, it allows them to see what the couple prefers and just to get to know them a little bit better.

Checklist on the Day

There are some images that the photographer will want to capture.

  • Bride getting ready
  • Dad seeing his daughter in the dress for the first time
  • Bride going to the car
  • Bride outside Church with parents
  • Father or Mother giving away the bride.
  • Vows / Exchanging Vows and of course the Kiss
  • Register signing and walking down the aisle
  • Wedding couple shots along with wedding party shots
  • Cutting the Cake

In the morning I will also look for detail shots. This will include rings, garter and gifts. It is also lovely to capture exchange of gifts between family and wedding party. During the day I will be looking all over for some candid images of guests. During the speeches I will be concentrating on the top table. It usually pays off to keep a close eye on guests also at this time. We then come to the first dance which is always fun. After that there are just candid shots of the dancing.

Of course this does not cover it all. As a photographer, I will be snapping away all day.

A little about me.

I’ve spent years helping people to find the perfect sole. In my shoe shop in the heart of Derry and now through my passion for photography
I get to photograph people with their soulmates! My daughter Bronagh and parents have always been and always will be a big part of my life. We have shared so many moments and enjoy looking at older photos and laughing together. Moments and the moments between moments during a wedding or a portrait session hold so much emotion. I love to capture images in a fun, natural and classic way. I’ve been passionate about photography for years, from the darkroom to my digital camera today, and storytelling is at the heart of what I do. I’m Gerard and I look forward to telling your story.

At Gerard Gormley photography, I strive to get the best images possible. Please feel free to share and like this post. You can also follow my work on FacebookInstagram and Twitter.
